Relationship Violence Can Happen to Anyone

It is everybody’s business to dialogue and build shared concern about the issue.

Let Our Voice Run focuses on taking a proactive approach on addressing abusive behaviours experienced by young adults in Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL). We promote restorative initiatives to end relationship violence on campuses.

Relationship violence involves the intentional use of force or power, threatened or actual, against other persons by an individual or small group of individuals. Acts of relationship violence (which can be physical, sexual, or psychological/emotional) can happen between intimate partners or among individuals who are not related by family ties but who may know each other. It includes harassment, bullying, assault, sexual violence by acquaintances or strangers (Dahlberg & Krug, 2002).

Relationship violence can happen to anyone and we believe it is our shared concern to dialogue about this issue to raise awareness. We believe that:

  1. Relationship violence can happen to anyone. This can happen between romantic partners or in the context of academic work, hostel residential life, extracurricular activities on campus with acquaintances or strangers.
  2. When traumatic stress is not processed, it is transmitted and it affects our mental well-being and ability to relate to others healthily.
  3. It is everybody’s business to dialogue, build shared concern about the issue and foster respectful relationships for a safe campus environment for learning.

REFLECTIONS FROM
LOVR MEMBERS

“LOVR made me know more about myself, and opened up a lot of opportunities for me to improve. It initially seemed to me that my goal is to learn how to better help others, but what I didn’t expect was how much I benefited from having a space to share about topics and perspectives that I have never even shared with my family or loved ones.”
Yong Sheng
“The engagement gave me the opportunity to reflect on the experiences of various stakeholders in the case of sexual harm, as well as to learn from other participants. It has also opened my eyes to restorative approaches for the first time and challenged my existing perspectives and thoughts. It was a fruitful and unique conversation that I could be a part of!”
